Royal Sands develops nanoscale chemistry that changes what water and waste can be made to do. Taurus cements fine tailings into free-draining ground. Aquarius brings ferrate treatment within reach of small and remote drinking water systems.

The science

Polymer flocs fail because they were never structural.

Dispersed clay fines are held apart by a DLVO energy barrier. The standard industry fix, polymer bridging flocculation, spans that gap with long molecules. It works in a jar and reverses under pipeline shear and long-term load.

The incumbent approach

Bridging flocculation

Polymer chains physically bridge particles into flocs. The bond is mechanical and reversible, so the structure degrades exactly where it matters.

The Taurus approach

Coagulate, then cement

Charge-neutralizing coagulants first collapse the energy barrier and clump dispersed fines into open clusters. Metered carbonate, iron-oxide or silica reagents then cement that structure at its point contacts.

The platforms

One chemistry family, two products

Both platforms come from the same core competence: reading a stream at the nanoscale, then choosing the reagent sequence that stream actually needs.

Platform 01

Taurus

Fines-growth cementation for tailings and residual waste

Turns mature and fluid fine tailings into a stable, free-draining deposit that carries load, without a pre-dewatering stage and without leaving you a second water problem.

Mechanism
Charge neutralization, then metered mineral cementation at aggregate point contacts.
Design outcome
Dual porosity built in place: dense aggregates separated by an open network that drains like sand.
Regulatory driver
Alberta Directive 085 deposit performance and progressive reclamation obligations.
Carbon angle
The carbonate pathway precipitates CaCO₃ and can consume captured kiln CO₂.
Status: bench validation, NAIT ERA Discovery dossier in preparation. Field trial is the next gate.
Platform 02

Aquarius

Ferrate treatment for small and remote drinking water

Ferrate is a powerful oxidant, coagulant and disinfectant in a single reagent. Aquarius localizes and independently verifies it for systems that have no multi-stage plant and no full-time operator.

Why ferrate
Oxidation, coagulation and disinfection in one step, with no chlorinated by-product burden.
Why it has not landed
Stability, supply and verification, not efficacy. Those are engineering and logistics problems.
Design constraint
Must be operable by local staff, freight-tolerant, and cold-climate capable.
Who it serves
First Nations, Arctic, rural and off-grid systems that large incumbents pass over.
Status: parallel research thread. Community partners sought for co-design before any deployment.

The chemistry generalizes across aqueous environments. These are the four markets where the problem is largest, the obligation is clearest, and we can prove the technology fastest.

Getting to deployment

Nobody deploys chemistry into a stream they have not read

Before Taurus or Aquarius touches a site, that site has to be characterized. We run that characterization as a bounded, paid engagement. It de-risks the pilot for the operator and it funds the technology for us.

The step that has to happen anyway

Every deployment needs a defensible read of what is actually in the stream: the dispersed clays, the residual organics, the pore-water chemistry and the ionic conditions that decide which reagent sequence will work.

We sell that read as a standalone service. It is real revenue, it is genuinely useful whether or not you go on to a pilot, and every stream we characterize sharpens the design engine behind both platforms.

Zeta potential, SEM morphology, hydraulic conductivity and settling behaviour after shear. The output is a picture of the mechanism, not a pass/fail.

The reagent sequence your stream needs, and an honest read on whether Taurus, Aquarius, an existing product, or nothing at all is the right answer.

Pilot, if it fits

Where the characterization supports it, a staged bench-to-field program with ownership and data rights settled up front.

Typical first engagement: a bounded pilot or benchmark study in the $15K to $80K range, scoped to the stream rather than to a rate card.

Every performance figure on this page is an engineering design target with a stated test method behind it, not a certified field result, and we will hand over the method to anyone who asks. Royal Sands holds no patents; our advantage is the diagnostic know-how to read a stream and choose the sequence it needs. We would rather tell you that plainly than have you find out in due diligence.
